A Covid-19 Christmas: Travel restrictions have been lifted (but for a limited time only)

It’s the most magical time… but also the most volatile.
Ireland’s Level 3 restrictions on inter-county travel and meeting friends and family have been lifted today, Friday, December 18th… but health experts are warning that ignoring the strict advice on hygiene over Christmas could result in an “explosive concoction” for Irish hospitals in the New Year.
As it stands, the gathering and travel restrictions will be relaxed from today until Wednesday, January 6th, 2021.
As part of the temporary rule changes, you can mix with a maximum of two other households or meet a maximum of three households outdoors (away from your home or garden) while maintaining strict physical distancing. Face coverings are recommended in all busy or crowded areas.
However, An Taoiseach Michéal Martin has suggested that the end date could be brought back, should the coronavirus situation worsen over the holidays.
The Taoiseach said that the matter will be finalised at a special meeting of the Cabinet on Tuesday, December 22nd.
Health experts concerned about ‘lag effect’
Speaking to Morning Ireland, Health Service Executive Chief Executive Paul Reid said the “lag effect is of concern here … so what people do now will impact on the health service in two to three weeks’ time”.
Mr Reid warned that the only way to ensure a safe Christmas is to drastically reduce your contacts throughout the coming weeks, adding that meeting large numbers of contacts briefly, then cutting your contacts again afterwards is strongly discouraged and could result in an “explosive concoction” of Covid-19 cases in early January.
“Because certain things are permitted doesn’t mean you have to do them,” advises Elizabeth Canavan, Assistant Secretary-General, Department of the Taoiseach.
“It’s all about choice, what we are saying is – choose wisely and with the benefit all of the advice and information that we have.”
