This Cork sunflower-picking field is back (and it’s all for a brave local teenager)

As if we needed an excuse to gather an armful of sunflowers.
Joe’s Farm Crisps, an East Cork-based family-run farm in Killeagh, is hosting its annual sunflower picking fundraiser throughout July and August … and it’s all for an excellent cause.
This year, the event’s proceeds will benefit Lisgriffin’s Paudie Coady, aged 16, who suffers from Friedreich’s Ataxia, a rare genetic disorder that causes progressive damage to the nervous system.

Paudie Coady, aged 16, with his brother Rory, 13, who sadly passed away last year.
The Coady family is also dealing with the effects of the loss of their other son, 13-year-old Rory, to Friedreich’s Ataxia last September, while their mother Della is in residential care in Dublin with Huntington’s disease.
“The last year has been an incredibly difficult time for the Coady family and we, as a farm and family, are incredibly proud to help fundraise to get the support Paudie needs,” said Sandra Burns of Joe’s Farm Crisps.
“Since we first started the sunflower picking event, we have been able to raise money for lots of different charities close to our hearts, and this year’s event is even more significant than others. The farm offers wonderful views, a lovely walk and is a fantastic family day out. If you have been following my cousin Paudie and his family’s story and feel like supporting them, we would be delighted if you would join us on our farm over the next few weeks.”
Sunflower Picking will begin this week on the following days:
Thursday 23rd July – Open 4pm-8pm
Friday 24th July – Open 4pm-8pm
Saturday 25th July – Open 10am-4pm
Sunday 26th July – Open 10am-4pm
Entry costs €40 per car, which includes one bunch of freshly picked sunflowers and access to the farm’s scenic walking trails, complete with plenty of photo-worthy spots. Fancy bringing home even more blooms? Additional bunches are available for €20 each.
There’s no need to book – just turn up (cash only), and you’ll also be supporting a good cause, with a donation from the sunflower-picking event going to the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.
