Sad news as one of Cork’s oldest native oak trees falls in Curraheen

It’s a sad sight for walkers in Curraheen today.
One of Cork city’s oldest native oak trees has been lost after collapsing along the Curraheen walkway.
Sharing the news on Instagram, Cork City Council described the tree’s fall as a significant loss, with the oak believed to have been one of the oldest of its kind in the city.
“We are sad to report the loss of what’s believed to be one of the oldest native oak trees in Cork city,” the council said.
Thankfully, nobody was injured when the tree came down on Wednesday.
“While it’s not clear why the tree fell at this time, what is clear is that its decline was caused by ongoing anti-social behaviour and repeated fires being set within its trunk.”

Despite the loss, there is hope that the tree’s story won’t end here.
The council’s Parks Department plans to salvage sections of the oak, with the timber set to be assessed by a chainsaw sculptor once it has been removed from the site.
“While this is a loss, the tree’s legacy may live on. Our Parks Department hopes to repurpose sections of the oak, with the timber being assessed by a chainsaw sculptor once removed off-site.”
The news has prompted a wave of sadness online, with many people expressing disappointment that repeated acts of vandalism ultimately contributed to the loss of one of Cork’s oldest natural landmarks.
