Expect giant puppets and a free circus school for kids in Ballydehob this weekend

Much of it won’t cost a cent.
The tiny West Cork village of Ballydehob is preparing for a big weekend with serious personality, as the Ballydehob Jazz Festival returns for its 20th edition this May Bank Holiday with one of the best free programmes of the year.
From April 30th to May 4th, an estimated 8,000 visitors will descend on the seaside village of just 345 residents, drawn by a festival that blends music, creativity and that unmistakable wild West Cork charm.

At the heart of the celebrations is the much-loved free music trail, which will see more than 40 live performances pop up across pubs, cafés and outdoor corners of the village. Expect everything from jazz and blues to folk and experimental sounds — the kind of eclectic, slightly offbeat mix that has long appealed to Ballydehob’s loyal following of artists, musicians and free spirits.
But it’s not just about the tunes. The festival spills out into the streets with a packed programme designed to keep both young families and culture-hungry weekenders entertained.
Tons of fun for kids
A major draw this year is the free children’s circus school, alongside Now and Then, a striking aerial circus show that promises to stop passers-by in their tracks. Giant puppets from the Ballydehob Puppet Company will roam the streets, while the ever-popular Jazz Funeral Parade will once again wind its way through the village in a joyful explosion of colour, music and community spirit.
Sunday brings a more laid-back daytime vibe with the Jazz West Cork Craft & Food Market, offering local produce, handmade goods and plenty of grazing opportunities for visitors soaking up the atmosphere.
For those looking to get involved, there are all-level lindy hop dance classes during the day, before things ramp up into the lively “Moonshine Shindigs” by night.

Organised largely by volunteers and deeply rooted in the local community, the festival has grown into what many call “the biggest small jazz and arts festival in the world”.
With free events around every corner, a relaxed, inclusive atmosphere, and West Cork’s rugged beauty as a backdrop, Ballydehob is once again shaping up as the perfect Bank Holiday escape — whether you’re wrangling kids or chasing good music.
