Robots, Romans and free Sunday kids’ entertainment? This Open Day has it all

Listen up, parents.
If you’ve got a curious kid at home who’s forever building, fixing or asking “how does that work?”, this is one for the diary.
As part of Engineers Week 2026, Engineers Ireland Cork Region is hosting Meet the Engineers – Family Open Day on Sunday, March 1st from 12pm to 4pm at Lifetime Lab — and it’s completely free.
Organised by the Young Engineers Society (YES) Cork with support from Cork County Council, the event is all about making engineering fun, hands-on and accessible for children and young people (and yes, parents are welcome to get stuck in too).
What’s happening?
On the day, families can expect robotics demonstrations, a Roman re-enactment experience, a K’NEX engineering challenge, an interactive engineering trail and exhibitor stands from local engineering companies. Everything will be staffed by volunteer engineers from the Cork region, so there’ll be plenty of real-life experts on hand to answer questions and maybe even spark a future career idea or two.
The open day forms part of a packed week of activity for Engineers Week, which runs nationally from February 28th to March 6th, with workshops, school visits and hands-on science sessions happening throughout the week.
But Sunday’s event is the big one for families — a chance to wander in, explore at your own pace and let the kids experiment, build and discover without any pressure. No booking required, no tickets needed — just show up and see where their imagination takes them.
Free, educational and guaranteed to burn off a bit of Sunday energy? Sounds like a win all round.
