Country music, but make it cool: An open call invites all ages to dance and move

By Yay Cork January 15, 2026January 14, 2026

Country music is having a renaissance — and not just on vinyl shelves.

This spring, it’s hitting the dance floor in Country OK, a joyful, open-invitation performance project led by dancer and choreographer Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín, and it’s looking for people aged 14 and older who want to move, experiment and be part of something genuinely different.

Fresh from a standout run at Cork Midsummer Festival 2024, Country OK is heading west with the support of Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre, creating an intergenerational dance space that celebrates the physical, emotional pull of country music — the hip-twisting, heart-on-your-sleeve kind that once filled dance halls across Ireland.

This isn’t about cowboy hats or nostalgia. It’s about bodies in motion, collective rhythm, and reclaiming social dance as something contemporary, communal and slightly unexpected. Think live musicians, professional dancers, and a room full of people moving together — no mirrors, no judgment, no “right” way to dance.

Rehearsals will run across February and March 2026, with participants able to choose between:

  • O’Donovan Rossa GAA Pavilion (Wednesdays, 11:00am–12:30pm)
  • Uillinn West Cork Arts Centre, Skibbereen (Wednesdays, 6:30pm–8:00pm)

You don’t need dance training. You don’t need to be “good”. You just need curiosity, openness and a willingness to show up. The project is deliberately inclusive — welcoming young people and adults of all ages, with no upper age limit, and with supports available to ensure people with disabilities can take part.

The process will culminate in two public performances at Town Hall, Skibbereen, on Saturday, March 28th and Sunday, March 29th, 2026.

Participation is free, but places are limited and the deadline to get involved in February 4th. Email Siobhán Ní Dhuinnín (siobhannidhuinnin@gmail.com) or text 086 1074770 to put your name down.
