Cork’s first mobile matcha bar is popping up in two city locations

By Katie Mythen-Lynch August 22, 2025August 21, 2025

It shouldn’t taste like grass.

That’s the first important piece of information South African entrepreneur Monica Steencamp wants you to know about matcha.

The trendy drink is the star of the show at Monica’s new business Moon Child, a new pop-up with a unique matcha menu unlike anything else in the city.

Monica is bringing her popular matcha menu to the Mahon Point Farmer’s Market on Thursdays and Douglas Farmer’s Market on Saturdays.

The menu features the classic O.G. Matcha, prepared with a choice of milk, honey, or maple. For those seeking a unique twist, the Earl Matcha and Rooibos Matcha blend artisan syrups with the traditional matcha base, offering a fragrant and layered flavour.

“The most common criticism I’ve heard is that it tastes like grass… it shouldn’t!” Monica told us.

“It all comes down to the quality of the powder you’re using. After calling this city home for nearly seven years, I wanted to contribute something unique. Our goal with Moon Child is to make the enjoyment of matcha more accessible.”

Other menu highlights include the indulgent Blanco Matcha made with local O’Conaill’s white chocolate, and the refreshing Jasmine Matcha for a light and floral finish.

“Matcha is a finely ground powder of specially grown and processed green tea leaves. Unlike traditional green tea, where the leaves are steeped and then discarded, with matcha, you are consuming the entire leaf. This results in a higher concentration of antioxidants, vitamins, and a unique flavour profile.” Monica adds.

“Its earthy, slightly bitter notes are often balanced with a touch of sweetness, creating a smooth and complex beverage. Matcha is known for providing a calm, focused energy boost without the jitters associated with coffee, thanks to its combination of caffeine and the amino acid L-theanine.”

Fancy trying it for yourself? Moon Child will be trading at the Mahon Farmer’s Market on Thursdays and Douglas Farmer’s Market every Saturday.
