Here’s a rare chance to drink wine in Cork Freemasons’ Hall on Tuckey Street

Most of us have no clue about what goes on in there.
But if you’ve ever fancied taking a look inside Cork’s mysterious Freemasons’ Hall, here’s your chance.
For one night only, the organisation will open its doors on Tuckey Street on Friday, November 29th at 7pm not for ancient rites, but for something equally ceremonial: wine tasting.
“Join us for an unforgettable evening of wine, history, and community as we come together to support the extension of the historic Cork Freemasons Hall, originally built in the 1770s. Partnering with The Wine Buff Cork, we’re offering an exclusive wine-tasting experience that will take your palate on a journey through a curated selection of exceptional wines from around the world.” the group announced.

The event is a fundraiser to support the controversial extension of the Cork Freemasons’ Hall. Despite several objections, 54 sqm of the city’s Bishop Lucey Park was transferred to the male-only membership group for €1.
The Freemasons say the planned extension will include new fire exits and lift facilities, making the venue more accessible and compliant with modern safety standards.
“Your participation will help ensure Freemasons’ Hall can continue to serve our community for generations to come,” they added.
The historic hall is opened up to the public on a few occasions during the year. Following the latest building project, the group has promised to open the property to visitors more frequently, adding up to 20 extra hours per month.
There’s plenty of interesting stuff to check out inside, including display cabinets containing historic items relating to important events in the life of the Masonic Order including old Masonic aprons, levels and badges from the eighteenth century. One of the levels displayed there was used at the laying of the foundation stone of St Patrick’s Bridge and St Fin Barre’s Cathedral.
A section of this room is also devoted to the Hon Mrs. Elizabeth Aldworth (née St Ledger) the only female ever to be admitted to the Masonic Order.
