Opening soon, Bayou is bringing New Orleans-inspired comfort food to Cork

The doors open on Wednesday, September 18th.
Behind the scenes at Bayou, The VQ’s newest restaurant, the final tweaks are being made to a New Orleans-inspired menu that will thrill fans of Southern American comfort food.
It’s the realisation of a dream for foodie couple Kate Crawford, from Arkansas and her husband Josh Crawford, the third generation of the Cork chip shop family behind the famous KC & Son & Sons, in Douglas.
Josh’s dad Wesley Crawford, a familiar face on the Cork food scene, will be lending a hand at Bayou too, bringing many years of experience to the new venture.
Kate and Josh have transformed the old City Grill on MacCurtain Street with a moody forest green wash of paint, beautiful street tiles purchased in Derby Pottery and Tile in the Big Easy, USA and installed by Chris Oates, and an eye-catching custom sign over the door, created by local illustrator and signwriter Laurynas Damijonaitis of Dami Designs.

“I fell in love with Cajun food before I even tried it, being a big fan of Gambit from X-Men,” Josh told Yay Cork.
“I had my first taste in Chicago at a place called Seventh Heaven and was blown away. Several trips to Louisiana only solidified the love.”
What’s on the menu?
Buckle up. At Bayou, diners can expect all the classics, from an all-day breakfast of American biscuits, thick cuts of ham, fried chicken, watermelon salad, fried okra, hot honey, and beignets to black filter coffee and cafe au lait.
“Lunch will include chicken and andouille gumbo, chicken jambalaya, red beans and rice, our take on Muffulettas (homemade focaccia), various po’ boys, and hush puppies.” Josh told us.
“Expect plenty of homemade ranch sauce. We’ll have our own take on Natchitoches pies and fromajardis pies too!”
The vibe is relaxed, casual, and soulful: “The food is what makes us happy, basically.” says Josh.
“It’s not complicated or exotic. Just good bold flavours. The music we’ll be playing is all soul, funk, country, jazz and bluegrass – again, a soundtrack that makes us happy. We offer sit down and take away. No reservations.”
Did we mention the mini pecan and pumpkin pies? Bayou will open from 8am to 4pm from Wednesday, September 18th.
