Everything to know about Old Brennan’s Wine House, Cork’s newest wine bar

By Katie Mythen-Lynch May 17, 2024May 20, 2024

Add this one to your list.

Old Brennan’s Wine House is now open at No 7 Oliver Plunkett Street, with more than 100 wines to choose from and a tasty menu of nibbles to complement each glass.

Owned by managing partner Frank Schiltkamp, previous maître and sommelier of Greenes Restaurant, and well-known Cork publican Benny McCabe, the new bar boasts a cosy handcrafted, candlelit interior with a Mediterranean vibe.

Upstairs is an art gallery you can peruse over a glass of vino and the first exhibition, Art from the Inside, is now open, showcasing art by inmates at Cork prison. All proceeds from an auction of these pieces will go to the Children’s Leukemia Association.

Drinks and food are served on both floors, with a fine cheese board (think Smoked Knockanore Cheddar, Le Maubert Brie, Carozzi Gorgonzola, red onion relish, pickles, caperberries, grapes, toasted pecans, crackers and sourdough – €16) charcuterie and small plates on the go.

There’s also a Brennan’s Butter Board; sourdough served with caramelised shallot and chive butter, leek oil, and crispy onions (€9) and a mouthwatering fish platter featuring smoked salmon, mackerel mousse, anchovy butter and all the extras – outrageously good with a chilled glass of white.

Here’s the menu:

“Our wine list is based on classic wine styles with a heavy focus on old-world wines,” they told us.

“A few natural wines are available as well. We have approximately 100 wines listed with a large selection available by glass. We will be featuring a large selection of Irish wines and other Irish wine-related produce soon.”

A limited selection of beers, spirits and cocktails are also available.

Old Brennan’s Wine Bar is open Monday from 4pm, closed Tuesday and Wednesday, open Thursday from 4pm, Friday from 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 2pm.

“We are currently operating on a walk-in basis only but will do reservations in future,” they added.
