The first analogue camera library in Ireland opens in Cork this week

By Yay Cork October 24, 2023October 13, 2023

Bored of scrolling through photos on your phone?

Although the advantages of modern technology are wide-ranging, there’s no doubt that the instant nature of current camera phones robs us of the excitement of waiting for the pictures to be developed and the general mystery of the whole process.

Thankfully, for those who wish to recapture some of that excitement, Ireland’s first Analogue Camera Library is opening in Cork this week, thanks to some sound heads at Creative Ireland, Cork City Library Service and Cork Film Centre.

The Slow Camera Exchange will launch on Thursday, October 26th at the City Library on the Grand Parade at 5pm.

“Cork City Libraries are excited to establish the first analogue camera library in Ireland, and maybe even Europe!” they told us.

“By providing analogue cameras for loan to communities and artists in the city we are honouring the legacy of Hermann Marbe by ensuring inclusivity in the arts for all.”

Leading up to the launch of the Camera Library the team behind the SCE has been testing and cataloguing the cameras while offering workshops to Cork City communities.

Want to borrow a camera? This is how it works…

The camera library will be available to members of the SCE Club – people who have gone through an induction session with one of the SCE team members. This helps ensure the correct handling and use of the camera collection.

Anyone with an interest and some experience in photography is welcome to register for one of the induction sessions and become a SCE Club member. The next induction session will take place on November 12th, 2023 at Civic Trust House, Cork City.

To register, visit theslowcameraexchange.com.
