He left a lasting impression on Cork.

Now you can learn more about the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass’s visit to Ireland over 175 years ago by joining a Leeside walking tour led by Dr. Adrian Mulligan of Bucknell University in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, USA.

The tour of the trail, which illuminates some of the key locations where Douglass, a former slave, delivered public lectures during his 1845 visit to the city, will take place from 2pm to 3pm on Wednesday, July 12th, 2023.

It will provide an insight into the rich history and geography of Corkonian abolitionism, which would prove so consequential to achieving emancipation, particularly in the United States.

“While Frederick Douglass was the best-known abolitionist to visit Cork, he was part of a tradition involving many other abolitionists who made the journey before and after him.” said the organisers of Douglass Week in Cork.

“The Cork Abolitionists Trail, part of the Journeys for Freedom Project, highlights locations visited by these extraordinary women and men and amplifies their stories and those of the Irish people and organisations that inspired them.”

The starting point for the tour is the Frederick Douglass mural on the Grand Parade (outside Lloyd’s Pharmacy). Reserve your free spot here.
