There were no Pride flags flying in Crosshaven this year – until one local took charge

By Yay Cork June 20, 2023June 20, 2023

Rainbow flags flutter all over the country in June.

But as Pride month began in the seaside village of Crosshaven this year, one local noticed that the symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride was missing from the shops, bars, and streets.

“I am a resident in Crosshaven and noted that there was not one Pride flag flying in Crosshaven or surrounding areas for Pride Month,” Anna told us.

“Like everywhere, there is a diverse community down here and many LGBTQ+ people and allies.”

Instead of grumbling or complaining, Anna decided the fastest fix would be to correct the situation herself.

“I bought several Pride flags and decided to approach businesses in the area. I have been overwhelmed with the support from businesses and online.

Turns out the businesses in the bustling village appreciated the reminder and within 24 hours, the rainbow flag was proudly displayed in hair salons, pharmacies, and cafés and hoisted on flagpoles over the glittering harbour and outside the town’s famous funfair.

“I also reached out to Crosshaven House. They have a geodesic dome in the garden and this will light up in the pride colours from Monday to Thursday this week, from dusk to midnight.”

Anna hopes her local project will inspire others to celebrate diversity and inclusion by displaying Pride flags wherever they can be seen.

“We need more representation in small towns for those who can’t make it into the Cork City Pride. I’m hoping other towns and villages will do the same,” she added.
