This adorable Cork farm is adding glamping pods so families can sleep over

By Katie Mythen-Lynch May 26, 2023May 26, 2023

The kids will lose their minds for this.

Already a dream day-out destination for many Cork children, Leahy’s Open Farm is getting ready to open eight new glamping pods so families can enjoy a sleepover on the property.

Work is well underway on the new additions at the popular venue in Dungourney, just outside Midleton.

The family is working with local builder Brian Rodgers and his team in Woodview Building to construct eight pods on the site, each one sleeping up to six people.

“We have been talking about glamping pods for years, but we never had the time to go and do them, as the open farm is just getting busier and busier, then Covid hit and that put a stop to us,” Teresa told Yay Cork.

“We have been inundated with customers asking for places to stay near us, or better again if they could stay on the farm. This is something we have been considering for a long time.

The cosy pods will feature all the necessities for a short getaway, including a kitchenette, sofa, dining area, bunk beds, a double bed, and ensuite bathroom.

“The pods are located beside the open farm, so guests will be able to avail of the open farm during their stay,” says Teresa.

Just steps from the pods, visitors can get up close to the farm’s gentle residents, petting a snake, rabbits, mice and guinea pigs, milking and feeding the goats, and meeting hens, sheep, donkeys, Falabella horses, and alpacas.

Construction will be completed by July, with landscaping to follow and the team hopes to welcome their first farm stay guests in late summer, all going to plan.

“The pods are located beside forestry and we have lovely walks, a holy well, and a lake to explore, on foot or on bikes. We are investing over €300,000 in this project and we cannot wait to open them to customers later this year.”

Leahy’s is also constructing a new ice cream factory on site this year, having outgrown their current building. Available in a variety of tasty flavours, the ice cream is made from milk supplied by two local dairy farms.

In the meantime, there’s plenty of fun to be had on the farm for day visitors

“We have revamped one of the museums, which is now looking amazing, we have a lovely new cow for our milking demonstrations, our new fairy trail is open in the little forest and we are in full swing at the moment with school tours, so it’s a busy, busy time,” adds Teresa.
