Gardaí hope ‘people from all backgrounds’ will apply for 1,000 new roles

By Yay Cork March 22, 2023March 21, 2023

‘It’s a job worth doing’.

That’s the theme of a new Garda Síochána campaign to recruit 1,000 new Gardaí across the country during 2023.

The latest Garda recruitment competition will open on March 24th and Garda Commissioner Drew Harris is hoping to attract applications from people with a broad range of backgrounds.

“An Garda Síochána is an increasingly diverse organisation.” said Commissioner Harris.

“We have one of the highest rates of female officers in Europe and in our last Garda competition, more than 20 percent of applicants were from minority communities.

“However, we recognise that we have more to do in this regard to meet our aim of being fully representative of the people we serve. We want, and need, people from all backgrounds and communities to be Gardaí, and I would ask them to please apply. This is the only way we will get the representation among our ranks that communities need and deserve.”

Commissioner Harris said the organisation also wants to attract people who have gone overseas to return home and be a Garda.

“This is a great opportunity to make a positive impact on the country you grew up in,” he added.

To promote the recruitment competition, a €550,000 promotional campaign under the tagline ‘It’s A Job Worth Doing’ will go live this week, also targeting Irish people living in the UK, the US, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand.

The campaign, based on insights from Gardaí, aims to show the nature of the job – working at 4am, making arrests, being physically active, as well as the significant personal and social benefits such as engaging with communities, arresting criminals, helping victims of crime, and the camaraderie of colleagues.

Candidates can apply at publicjobs.ie from midnight on March 24th, 2023 until 3pm on April 14th, 2023.
