INSIDE the Cork B&B named Ireland’s most Pet-Friendly Destination of 2022

By Katie Mythen-Lynch December 30, 2022December 30, 2022

It’s not easy to find a pet-friendly staycation spot.

But one West Cork B&B has created a magical haven for guests and their four-legged friends, scooping ‘Pet-Friendly Destination of the Year 2022’ in the Georgina Campbell Awards.

Located in Durrus on the beautiful Sheepshead Peninsula, right on the Wild Atlantic Way, Carbery Cottage Guest Lodge is owned by dog trainer Mike Hegarty and artist Julia Bird.

As well as a friendly welcome, your furry friend will enjoy access to a 60-metre dog play area and agility course so they can stretch their legs to their heart’s content.

Afterwards, you can unwind with an alfresco drink in the garden bar or take the walk around the land, specially created for guests.

“Our house is your house, relax and enjoy” proclaims the message on their website – and they really mean it,” says Campbell, Ireland’s leading food and hospitality writer.

“It’s a lovely, comfortable place to stay (the spacious bedrooms and bathrooms have all been upgraded recently) and everything about the house and the way it is run is guest-focused – especially if you have your four-legged friend(s) with you.

“Mike is a qualified dog trainer and, although guests travelling without dogs are still just as welcome, they have recently developed a 60-metre exercise area and they’re among the very few places in Ireland who actively encourage dogs, without breed or number restrictions.

“With or without pets, Carbery Cottage would make a wonderfully relaxed holiday base, and with very good food too – there’s a BYO garden bar and evening meals are available by reservation, Magic.”

Unlike many Airbnb options, there’s no size limit for dogs so whether your holiday buddy is a mini sausage dog or a Great Dane, you’ll be warmly welcomed.

There are ducks, chickens, a goose, and ponies within the grounds too so ensure your canine companion is on a leash as you explore.

Carbery Cottage is open for three-night minimum stays. Email Carberycottage@gmail.com for more details.
