Cork County Council seeking Gaeilgeoir to write a play for children

By Carl Kinsella January 18, 2022
Gaeilgeoir

A great opportunity.

Cork County Council has issued a call-out for a Gaeilgeoir playwright to write a play for young audiences through Irish.

The project is supported by Creative Ireland, in collaboration with the county council’s Arts and Irish Offices and Graffiti Theatre Company, and the final product will be performed in libraries and other locations throughout the country. Mentoring will be available to the artist whose project is selected.

Lord Mayor of the County of Cork Gillian Coughlan said: “Plays are a fantastic way of entertaining children and introducing them to a love of drama. The fact that the play will be in Irish is also really important.

“The Irish language is an intrinsic part of our culture, as a country, and as a county, and Irish language plays are a notable and proud part of Irish drama. It would be ideal for a Gaeilgeoir who is an aspiring writer.

“I hope it will encourage further works for children through the medium of Irish.”

The project will have three phases which will be advanced throughout the year: Writing and Development, Rehearsals and Production, and Performance. Expertise in writing and performance as Gaeilge for children will be provided by Graffiti’s Associate Director, Síle Ní Bhroin.

Any interested playwrights and artists have until midnight on Sunday, January 23rd to apply. No previous playwriting experience is required, but enthusiasm and a passion for writing and creating is key, along with a previous track record in developing and delivering a project.

An ability to work through Irish is vital and the artist should be at least 18 years of age, based in Ireland and able to travel to Cork as needed.

Applications can be made through the county council website, and more information can be obtained by email (arts@corkcoco.ie), or over the phone at 021 4285995.
