Craving some fresh air and exercise?

You don’t need to head for the countryside to feel at one with nature; a new virtual map allows viewers to see the exact locations of all the green spaces and potential walking trails within Cork city.

Developed by Cork Nature Network, the new Wild Walks project saw ecological surveys carried out to identify the sites which would best reflect Cork’s incredible biodiversity. These range from coastal woodlands to wildflower grasslands.

“While we often associate cities with a lack of green spaces and nature, there are actually plenty of places within the Cork city boundary where one can go to benefit from spending time in nature,” explains Gill Weyman, founder of CNN.

“We hope that by getting out in these spaces people will see for themselves why these delicate ecosystems need to be protected.’’

Several of the sites on the map also have signs placed by Cork Nature Network to highlight the unique species that can be found in the area so you can learn more about Cork’s biodiversity while you get your steps in for the day.

Funded by Cork City Council and Jacobs, the Wild Walks Interactive Map is free to use – just click on a symbol to learn more about the site pictured, including a background to the area, site location, trail length, and what plants and animals are found there.

Featured trails include the Lough, Ballincollig Regional Park, Hazelwood Trail, and Parkowen.
