Crazy video shows effects of burst pipe on Fermoy bridge

Water supply and traffic are both affected.

Thomas Kent Bridge in Fermoy was forced to close on Monday evening as emergency services and a team from Irish Water worked to fix a burst water main.

Video footage from the scene shows water spraying upwards from the pavement, as well as what appears to be damage to the structure of the footpath. Twitter user Louise Bunyan captured and shared video from the scene prior to the closure of the area.

In a statement issued last night, Irish Water noted that the repairs would not be completed until some time this morning. The statement read: “The repairs are complex due to the location of the burst on a bridge and works need to be carefully carried out.

“Due to the need for extensive traffic management onsite and for the safety of dedicated water services crews the repair of the burst cant commence until early tomorrow morning.”

In addition to traffic issues, homes and businesses in North Fermoy can expect supply issues through the earlier parts of the day.

Pat Britton, Irish Water, commented: “Irish Water and Cork County Council immediately dispatched crews to make the area safe. The repairs will be conducted as quickly and efficiently as possible early tomorrow morning, we aim to minimise disruption to the area and restore water for all customers.

“We understand the inconvenience unplanned outages can have on customers and we appreciate your patience as we work to restore normal water supply as quickly and as safely as possible.”
