There’s some frikkin’ delicious sandwiches coming out of this once-a-week food truck

They only open on Wednesdays.
But if you are lucky enough to find yourself in the vicinity of Ron D’s food truck in Ballydehob when the hatch rolls open, you are in for a treat like no other.
Foodies have been raving about the homemade sourdough sandwiches, freshly grilled, perfectly crisp, and stuffed with a festival of local ingredients.

Take, for example, the Muffuletta; inspired by a sandwich sold in New Orleans’ famous Central Grocery & Deli in the French Quarter, where it was first made by a Sicilian immigrant in the 1900s.
In their version, Ron D’s homemade sesame sourdough, baked weekly by the couple behind Ron D’s, Simon and Liz, is layered with salty cured meats (Capicolla and Gubbeen Salami) followed by the softer mortadella and topped with provolone cheese and giardiniera, an Italian pickled vegetable Italian relish.

Then there’s the Reuben, salt beef, tangy sauerkraut, Swiss cheese, and Russian dressing, with a Veggie Reuben involving chard and roasted portobello mushrooms.
An ‘Elvis’ sandwich popped up briefly – peanut butter, bacon, banana, and local honey. You never know what’s going to be on offer until the hatch opens just after noon.
Even their basic grilled cheese is a connoisseur’s dream; for this one, they layer Hegarty’s, Gubbeen, Durrus, and smoked farmhouse cheese on sourdough spread with charred scallion sour cream.
If you’ve got room for dessert then don’t miss the Potato Donuts; they come chocolate glazed, dusted with cinnamon and sugar and topped with strawberry rhubarb crumble, and also vegan and gluten-free.

The hatch opens in Ballydehob at 12:30pm, if you leave the city now you might just make it in time for lunch.
