Gardaí share new image in the hope of identifying skeletal remains found in Midleton

By Katie Mythen-Lynch March 1, 2021March 1, 2021

She was a woman in her seventies.

Little else is known about the skeletal remains discovered during works on the route of the new Midleton to Youghal greenway in January, but now Gardaí are asking the public for their help in identifying items found with them.

Speaking to the media outside Midleton Garda Station this morning, Superintendent Adrian Gamble, Midleton Garda station made a public appeal for information after DNA tests on the remains failed to match them to any known missing persons.

Test have shown the remains are likely those of a woman aged around 70 when she died. She was around 5’ 2” in height and large-framed. She also wore dentures and suffered from arthritis.

Gardaí shared an image of a piece of clothing, believed to be a nightdress, found with the remains in the hope that someone may recognise it.

“House to house enquiries have been undertaken in the local area, local missing person records have been reviewed as have missing person records retained by the Garda National Missing Persons Unit.” the Gardaí said in a statement.

“The investigation is ongoing and further scientific resources, including carbon dating have been engaged as part of the investigation.

“Someone in the community must know how the female skeletal remains came to be at this locally known “tipping point” off the Shanty Path at Roxborough, Midleton, Co. Cork.

“An Garda Síochána are determined to formally identify the deceased and treat her with the respect and dignity that she deserves. An Garda Síochána want to provide closure for a family that, at this early stage, remain unknown and ensure that the remains are brought to a final resting place.”

Superintendent Gamble has asked that anyone with any information contact Gardaí in Midleton on 021 462 1550.
