More heavy rain on the way but things are looking brighter for the weekend

By Yay Cork February 17, 2021February 17, 2021

We’re in for another drenching tonight.

But Met Éireann is forecasting some dry and sunny conditions for this weekend, once we weather the blustery showers, thunder and sleet between now and then.

Forecasters say cloud will thicken from the south this afternoon and outbreaks of rain will develop towards evening, with highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees and fresh, gusty winds.

According to the latest forecast: “Heavy rain will push up over the province early tonight, bringing a risk of spot flooding. The rain will turn to sleet in places, falling as snow about high ground.”

“It will become very windy for a time over eastern parts of the province and along the south coast with strong and gusty southerly winds veering westerly. Lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees.”

Tomorrow, Thursday will be another rather breezy day with sunny spells and blustery showers. Some of the showers will be heavy with a risk of isolated thunderstorms during the morning, but they will ease and die out during the afternoon.

“It will feel a little cooler than recent days, with top temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees, in fresh to strong and gusty west to southwest winds easing moderate to fresh later.”

What about the weekend?

Friday will begin mild, wet and windy, with widespread rain and a risk of flooding, with highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees.

By Saturday afternoon, however, Met Éireann has indicated that conditions look likely to improve during the afternoon with drier and brighter intervals developing.

Sunday is currently signalled to be dry with some sunshine across the bulk of the country and highs of 7 to 10 degrees.
