Met Éireann has issued two Status Yellow weather warnings for Munster, as Cork braces for a weekend of heavy rain and sleet and all hope for proper sneachta dissolves into the drizzle.

A Snow/Ice warning for Munster, Connacht and Leinster kicked in this morning and will remain in place until Friday at 8am, with “a band of sleet and snow spreading northeastwards during Thursday giving snow accumulations of up to 5cm in some areas (higher over the mountains), but transitioning to rain in the west and south on Thursday night.”

A second Status Yellow Wind warning for Munster, Connacht and Leinster has also been issued. Forecasters say “Strong to gale force southeast winds in conjunction with rain, sleet and snow will lead to poor visibility and hazardous conditions.

The wind warning is also in place for 24 hours until 8am on Friday.

According to Met Éireann, it will be windy and very cold in Cork for the rest of today, with highs of 1 to 4 degrees and an added wind chill factor due to strong and gusty southeasterly winds.

The sleet and snow will continue overnight, becoming patchy towards morning with lowest temperatures of 0 to 2 degrees.
