Cork’s city otters star in a brand new documentary (and you can see it for free)

By Yay Cork January 20, 2021January 20, 2021

They’re experts at social distancing.

But Cork’s elusive otter population will be front and centre in a brand new short film set to premiere on February 2nd, 2021.

Cork Nature Network is inviting curious Cork folk to be among the first to see their short film Cork Otters, directed by wildlife photographer and filmmaker Tom Mason and narrated by science communicator and TV presenter Dr Tara Shine.

“Cork city and the harbour has a very unique urban otter population, and surveys run by Cork Nature Network have shown that a number of otters live and forage in the city,” says Gill Weyman, Chair at Cork Nature Network.

“Otters are generally nocturnal animals, and they can be very shy, which can make spotting them a bit difficult. With this film, we intended to show people how important urban environments are for wildlife in general and otters in particular.”

The free online film event will kick off at 7pm with a brief introduction by Dr Shine, then a link to the film will be provided, followed by a panel discussion.

On the panel, you’ll hear from Dr Paddy Sleemans, a senior researcher at UCC, Chris Moody, illustrator and keen wildlife photographer, and Dr Karen Loxton, community and development Officer at SECAD Cork.

This film is funded by Patagonia, Lush, The Heritage Council and Cork County Council and you can register for a free ticket to the Zoom event here. Use the hashtag #GiveNatureaChance on social media to join the conversation.
