This patch of grass near The Lough is the site of a new community garden

By Yay Cork November 26, 2020November 26, 2020

It will be a community effort.

Residents of The Lough neighbourhood will be able to get involved in growing their own food this spring in a new community garden on Pouladuff Road.

Two groups, Green Spaces for Health and Bruscar Crow are collaborating on the project to turn the empty patch of grass next to the Lough Community Centre at the entrance to the Deer Park estate into a wheelchair-accessible garden planted with vegetables and flowers for pollinating insects.

The initiative will actively involve the local Meals on Wheels group, while encouraging locals of all ages to spend time outdoors with other members of their community, in a safe, productive setting.

The organisers have launched a GoFundMe campaign to help fund the idea.

“We have commissioned the Douglas Men’s Shed to build three raised boxes and three raised beds to be situated on the northern side of the Community Centre.” says Kim Anh “K” Eastman of Bruscar Crow.

“There are costs incurred with this project, we have secured a grant for €500 from the Cork City Council through Green Spaces for Health, and a further promise of funding from Green Spaces for Health and Bruscar Crow, but we need a little more to meet the start-up costs and ask for a small contribution for this project such as the cost of purchasing a cubic metre of enriched topsoil at €85 from MD O’Sheas or contributing to the costs of the build of the beds or purchasing a suitable bench for installation at the site.”

To donate, check out the campaign here.
