COVID-19: 552 new cases and two deaths as Ireland begins a second week of lockdown

By Yay Cork November 1, 2020November 1, 2020

A further 86 people have tested positive for Covid-19 in Cork.

As Ireland begins another week of Level 5 lockdown, the Health Protection Surveillance Centre has been notified of two additional deaths from the disease and 552 new confirmed cases in the past 24 hours.

Of the latest cases, 173 are in Dublin, with 86 in Cork, 40 in Limerick and 30 in Donegal. The remaining 223 cases are spread across all other counties.

Of the cases notified today, 275 are men and 275 are women, with 63% under 45 years of age. The median age is 36 years old. 330 Covid-19 patients are hospitalised, of which 47 are in ICU. There have been 17 additional hospitalisations in the past 24 hours.

Thanks to huge efforts by individuals, families, community groups, clubs and businesses across the country, Ireland is now bucking the trend in Europe in terms of new cases of #Covid. I just want to say thank you to everyone for doing so much to fight this virus. 🙏 pic.twitter.com/vRMX07xBAr

“We are making progress on #COVID19 – we are following public health advice. Young people especially,” said Chief Medical Officer Dr Tony Holohan in a tweet.

The worry now is that cases are increasing among those in the vulnerable 60+ age group.

“Best country in EU in most recent 7-day rates. But too early to stop. Rates still rising in >65s and have not dropped in Dublin. We need to keep it up.”
