These eco-friendly sunglasses are made from plants (and named after Irish beaches)

By Katie Mythen-Lynch May 22, 2020May 22, 2020

Ready for a new pair of sunnies?

A new Irish company is producing stylish sunglasses using an allergy-free plastic made from plants.

Crann’s products are made entirely of recycled and sustainable materials such as acetate, which is strong, lightweight, and flexible which makes it the preferred material for plastic-based products such as eyewear.

The brand’s new Trá Collection is inspired by some of Ireland’s most beautiful beaches an includes a few hat tips to the Cork coast too; the ‘Inchydoney’ (€79 here) comes in slick black or brown with matching lenses, while the ‘Barleycove’ (€64, pictured below) is a two-tone style that comes in an assortment of colours.

“We have spent 100s of hours designing, prototyping and testing to come up with The Trá Collection.” says Crann founder Eoin McGuinness.

“As a family, we always spend the month of August in a different Irish coastal town so we decided to keep these treasured memories alive by naming the latest collection after our favourite beaches.”

“We take stainless steel, PE plastic and wood that would have ended up in a landfill or the ocean. We break them down to workable materials and turn this waste into beautiful, handcrafted, fashionable sunglasses and watches.”

Eoin adds, “The fashion industry generates 4% of the world’s waste each year. By using recycled materials we are taking ‘waste’ turning into a product that is fashionable 100% recycled and recyclable.”

And there’s more; Crann has partnered with the Native Woodland Trust and donates €2 per product to the charity, which is dedicated to the preservation of Ireland’s remaining ancient woodlands. You can shop the range here.
