Your local postie is going above and beyond during the Covid-19 shut down

By Yay Cork March 25, 2020March 25, 2020

They don’t get enough credit.

Cork’s postal workers are on the ball with our deliveries in all kinds of weather, but with the upgraded Covid-19 self-isolation measures issued by the government this week, your local postie deserves some serious respect.

An Post has announced that, from today, postmen and women will not just deliver the post, they will also collect letters and parcels from older and more vulnerable members of the community, free of charge.

As a trusted point of daily contact, they will also ring the bell to check in on older and vulnerable people, take messages to local shops and pharmacist and enable outreach to a wider network of support organisations.

Newspaper deliveries

Starting next week, they will also deliver the newspaper to vulnerable people who are self-isolating, with registration for this service opening this weekend.

The new measures were announced today by An Post CEO David McRedmond.

“We are working actively with the national and local newspapers of Ireland to find a way that we will by the start of next week be able to distribute newspapers to people, starting with the elderly and vulnerable,” he said.

“We are also distributing two free postcards to everyone in our society so they can write to their loved ones and let them know they are thinking of them while staying apart.”

An Post is introducing a number of additional measures to help the elderly and vulnerable during the Covid-19 pandemic, says CEO David McRedmond | Follow live #coronavirus updates: https://t.co/5xl0IqJCmf pic.twitter.com/6y8pbp4tDU

How you can help

As An Post workers step it up to keep us all connected, there is something you can do to help: householders have been asked to do their bit and include their door handles and letterboxes in their regular cleaning schedule.

“In the interest of everyone’s health and safety, we ask that householders and businesses include their letterbox, doorbell and exterior door handles in their regular cleaning and disinfecting routine,” said An Post.

Wiping down your front door handle, letterbox and doorbell could help to keep everyone safer in the coming days.
