INSIDE Spirit of Discovery, the luxury cruise ship due in Cobh today

By Yay Cork July 19, 2019July 19, 2019

Wow.

It was christened by ship godmother Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, at an official naming ceremony in Dover earlier this month.

Now the Spirit of Discovery will make her maiden call to Cobh today, Friday, July 19th, bringing 999 passengers to explore the seaside town and beyond.

Having seen the interiors however, you couldn’t blame the visitors for heading back onboard a little early; guests enjoy the ultimate in five-star sailing.

So what’s it like inside? Here’s a sneak peek:

The ship boasts two pools, a luxury spa, a 444-seat theatre for West End performances and a secret Terrace.

During the day, The Britannia Lounge hosts talks from guest speakers. Later at night, it comes alive with dancing and live performances from singers, musicians and lecturers.

Music legend Jools Holland has worked closely with Saga to create The Club, designed as a classic 1950s cabaret club, with elegant wood panelling, velvet and of course, a grand piano.

Every cabin has a balcony, giving each guest their own private space, inside and out. And with an average floor plan of 215 square feet as standard, there’s quite a lot of space to enjoy.

The Living Room is the spot to enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail in the evening or gelato, fresh pastries and homemade cakes during the afternoon.

Residents can choose from an array of restaurants, from the grand dining room, to Oriental and seafood eateries with cuisines from all over the world.

No need to stock up on books before departure either; the library is a booklover’s paradise.

Passengers can browse and borrow from a curated selection of books covering history, travel and art.

Spirit of Discovery is the 60th of 102 calls this cruise season, a record year for the Port of Cork with over 200,000 passengers’ anticipated.

On average, cruise ship passengers spend €81 during their time in Cork; with 42% of this money being spent on shopping, 32% on excursion travel and 17% on food and drink.

Fancy sampling life aboard the Spirit of Discovery? The next cruise leaves Dover for the Baltic, through the Stockholm Archipelago and up into the Gulf of Bothnia, on August 17th, 2019.

The cost of a 15-night cruise? A cool €3,335 per person sharing.
