Don’t fancy being saddled with a hefty mortgage?
If you’re on the lookout for a low-cost property with room to improve, you’re part of a growing trend in Ireland that has more of us than ever seeking out bargain fixer-uppers.
Buyer beware though; the DIY life is not for everybody. Fixing up a house can be a messy and time-consuming business but with the right expert advice, some grit and determination, there’s every chance you could turn a rundown property into a dream home.
It makes financial sense too; with a deposit of €8,500, a first-time buyer could nab the priciest property on this list and have monthly repayments as low as €290 over 35 years – not bad when the average rent across the county is €1,036.
If you’re on the hunt for your own cheap Irish house, here are three to consider in Cork:
1. Watergate Street, Bandon
Asking price: €85,000 (auction on October 8th)
Opportunities to nab five-bedroom, two-bathroom family homes for less than €100k are rare, but No. 1 Watergate Terrace, Watergate Street could be a smart punt for the savvy buyer. Currently split into a three-bed house and a separate two-bed property, it could easily be renovated into a large family home, just a 1km stroll from Bandon town.
A weekend of weed-whacking would reveal quite a sizeable garden too.
2. Killinane, Liscarrol
Asking price: €80,000 (auction on September 24th)
This cosy one-bedroom cottage is a five-minute spin from Liscarroll village in North Cork. It’s been vacant for quite a while so it will need some work, but the bones of a cute country home are all there.
Inside there a living room with a huge stone fireplace, sunroom, annexe, kitchen complete with Aga, shower room, and one bedroom, with a small garden to the rear of the property.
3. The Steppes, Gortnabinna
Asking price: €55,000
Located in Gortnabinna, Renaniree (about 20 minutes outside Macroom and around one hour from Cork city) The Steppes is a three-bedroom bungalow on circa 0 .8 acres. While the inside needs some modernisation, it’s not in bad nick for a property in this price range. The views are spectacular too.
Inside there’s a sitting room, a kitchen/diner, three bedrooms and a bathroom. A small shed could be turned into extra studio or office space too.
