If it’s a handsome country pile you’re looking to spend it on, there’s a roomy home with a star-studded history waiting for you in Kinsale.

Ballywilliam House was built by William Barter in 1816 and while it changed hands a number of times in the years since, it’s best-known guest arrived in the 1990s.

American singer-songwriter Tori Amos bought the property 23 years ago, transforming it into a residential recording studio in 1995 to record her third album Boys For Pele.

A few years later the property also inspired Night of the Hunters – in the narrative the protagonist finds herself at Ballywilliam House. As magical forces guide her on an emotional and spiritual journey into the unknown, the house and grounds serve as her protector.

Ballywilliam House sits at the top of a tree-lined avenue on an elevated site overlooking the River Bandon.

There’s an orchard to the side and a handsome carved limestone doorcase with original fanlight to welcome you at the top of the limestone steps.

Inside the property has been gently restored, with light-filled drawing and dining rooms.

A country kitchen, four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and an array of rooms downstairs offer plenty of space for get-togethers and events.

A curved cantilevered staircase leads upstairs past a spectacular oriel window.

The ground are full of hidden treasures too; there are period features everywhere you look, a tire swing in the big old tree in the garden, and the large vaults, originally used for coal and storage, are now more commonly used for parties.

Hidden in the woodland, the current owners have built a dry stone seated theatre complete with fire pit.

There’s even a fresh water beach at the water’s edge, complete with remnants of an old jetty and fishing smokery.

If further fan trivia excites you, the photographs for the Night of Hunters project were all taken at Ballywilliam House, while the video for Star Whisperer, which was designed for a song on the album, was filmed there as well.

Novels have also been written here and one author claims that echoes of the faintest music, possibly from another century, kept him company while writing one of his books.
