6 Cork date night ideas that don’t involve the pub

By Yay Cork November 22, 2018November 22, 2018

Brought to you by Cork On Ice

Firstly, don’t get us wrong; we love the pub.

The local is a laid back, cosy place to chill out with your other half.

The thing is, it’s not the most original choice when your aim is to reconnect with your love after a hectic week of child wrangling and work.

Sometimes, stepping out of your comfort zone is one of the best things you can do for your relationship. Plus, who needs a hangover on a midweek morning?

Here are six fresh, fun ideas for a decidedly different date night:

1. Plan a dessert date

Head out for dessert; whether it’s a creamy gelato from your favourite stand or the decadent fudge cake at that fancy bistro in town, a dessert date is a cheap and cheerful way to catch up with each other – with an added dose of happiness in every spoon.

2. Try ice skating

Why should the kids have all the fun? Cork on Ice is open for the season and the weekly couples session is the perfect excuse for a midweek visit. Whether you hit the ice like a pro or slip and slide your way around the rink, you’re guaranteed a few laughs as well as a calorie-burning workout.

Bring the kids back next week to show off your moves. And don’t miss the hot chocolate at The Summit Cafe afterwards.

3. Cook up some friendly competition

Team up with some friends or another couple and host a weekly ‘Come Dine With Me’ night. Pick a theme for each night, like ‘curry’, ‘sushi’, ‘Italian’ or ‘Indian’.

You don’t have to keep score but it does make things more interesting. Charge everyone a fiver per dinner and the winner can choose a charity to donate the cash to at the end.

4. Take a drive

Pick a village or a town you’ve never spent time in and hit the road for the evening. Try the pub grub in Castlemartyr, hit the theatre in Macroom or breathe the sea air in Bantry.

Just a few hours away from your normal surroundings can seem like much longer – and you might discover a gem!

5. Ban the phones

When was the last time you actually stared into your partner’s eyes as you ate dinner? We’re all guilty of fixating on our phones during our downtime, but banning them entirely for a few hours will give you back some all-important romantic eye contact.

Play a board game or listen to an old favourite album afterwards to maximise your phone-free fun.

6. Have a spa night

Many Cork spas open later on Thursdays and Fridays, meaning you can begin your date night with a relaxing massage or facial.

Spending the evening wrapped up in a cosy robe, sweating away your stress in the sauna and bobbing about in the jacuzzi is guaranteed to leave you both in flying form the next day.

If you can’t swing a babysitter, lock the bathroom door and make your own spa at home!

Cork on Ice is now open at Mahon Point. To book your tickets, visit the website.
