This is the best time of day to catch a glimpse of Fota’s adorable new rhino calf

By Yay Cork August 20, 2026August 20, 2026

Dying to get a glimpse of Fota Wildlife Park’s new rhino baby?

Park rangers have revealed when visitors have the best chance of spotting its newest arrival, and there’s a particular time of day you’ll want to visit.

The young male calf and his mum, Maya, have access to their outdoor paddock but can also retreat into the rhino house – meaning there’s never a guarantee you’ll spot the newest member of the Fota family.

However, the wildlife park says your best chance of seeing the calf is between 11am and 4pm.

So if you’re planning a trip to Fota, make sure you swing by the rhino habitat during those hours and keep your eyes peeled.

You can also help name him

The calf, born on July 13th, is only the second Indian rhino ever born in Ireland and the second in the Wildlife Park’s history.

The Indian rhinoceros (Rhinoceros unicornis), also known as the greater one-horned rhino, is classified as Vulnerable by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), with an estimated 4,000 individuals remaining in the wild.

And there’s another exciting reason to visit – the public gets to help choose the calf’s name. Visitors can submit their suggestions at a collection point in the Serengeti Shop until September 13th.

Fota is looking for a name that reflects the rhino’s native range and cultural heritage, so get thinking.

And there’s a pretty good incentive to come up with the winning suggestion too – one lucky winner will receive an annual pass to Fota Wildlife Park.
