A comedian is staging a show for five people in Cork’s €400k Fireman’s Rest

At least it’s getting some use.
Cork’s controversial Fireman’s Rest will be the unique venue for an intimate comedy gig planned as part of Cork Fringe 2026 next month.
The festival, which runs from May 8th to 10th, is collaborating with Cork City Council and the Night-Time Economy Advisor to present a new site-specific performance ‘Johnny FIRE’ at The Fireman’s Rest, which was originally built in early 1892 and has borne witness to all of the historic occasions in Cork city, before being restored to the tune of €403,000 in 2020.
On May 7th, comedian John Spillane will take over the famous hut, described by one local councillor as ‘a glorified shed’, with a specially commissioned piece of comedic theatre. Limited to just five audience members per performance, there will be only three chances to catch this intimate 15-minute show, packed with Spillane’s sharp wit and inventive, improvised response to the space itself.
“The best nights out aren’t just good for business — they’re about creating genuine connection in the spaces we share.” said Night-Time Economy Advisor Fiona Collins.
“Great cities are built on exactly that, and we’re delighted to partner with Cork Fringe Festival to bring that spirit to life in Cork”
Festival Directors Daniel Cremin and Ineke Lavers said the performance will capture one of Cork Fringe Festival’s core aims: to activate unexpected spaces across the city and reimagine how they can be experienced through performance.
The Fireman’s Rest performance is one of several shows engaging with unconventional spaces across the programme. Spillane’s full-length show John of Thrones will take place at Elizabeth Fort over the weekend as well as PlayRoomPlay turning Callanan’s Bar into a fun house of surprises.
Tickets go on sale on April 29th and are extremely limited. Find them here.
