Wet, wet, wet: Heavy rain on the way as Met Éireann forecasts spot floods and thunder

Here comes the rain again.
If you’ve been enjoying the mostly dry (if a bit dull) weather lately, make the most of it — because the skies are about to open up across Cork.
Today (Thursday) will stay mainly dry but mostly cloudy, with just a few sneaky patches of drizzle or mist. Don’t expect much sunshine — bright spells will be limited — but at least it’s mild, with highs of 12 to 15°C in light easterly winds.
Tonight stays calm and cloudy, with lows of 5 to 11°C and just the odd misty patch. Nothing too dramatic… yet.
Tomorrow, Friday, will look fairly similar — mostly cloudy and dry, with the odd bit of drizzle. But the key change is in the winds, which will start to freshen from the southeast. That’s the sign of what’s coming next.
Because from Friday night, Cork’s weather is set to take a very soggy turn. Persistent rain will roll into the southwest, spreading eastwards through Saturday. Expect heavy downpours, some thundery bursts, and even a risk of spot flooding.
It’ll be breezy too, with gusty southeast winds whipping up along the coast.
Saturday night looks wet and blustery, and Sunday won’t start much better — heavy rain in the morning before things (finally) clear from the west later in the day. But don’t pack away the raincoat just yet: more showers will follow behind, some heavy with a rumble of thunder possible.
The unsettled spell continues into next week, with low pressure sticking around to keep things breezy, showery, and a little cooler.
