An affordable class that’ll give you hike skills to keep you safe on the hills

Thinking about taking up hiking?
It’s a brilliant hobby with tons of fitness and mental health benefits, but you do need to learn a few basics before setting out to try it.
That’s why Mountaineering Ireland is collaborating with Get Ireland Walking on a Happy Hiking Day as part of a week of celebrations in the lead-up to National Walking Day on September 28th.
Happy Hiking Day will be held on Saturday, September 27th, starting from the top of the mountain pass above the Kerryman’s Table on the L2750 between Rylan and Millstreet. The route will start from the carpark, hike a loop on the bog road and back over Seefin. Then follow Duhallow way west before heading to summit of Musheramore and spot height 555, looping back to carpark.

Throughout the day you will learn about movement skills, basic navigation, map reading, equipment, and safety considerations.
“These Hill Skills Days are a great opportunity for anyone new to the hills or those who want to learn the basics of navigation to join a qualified instructor for a full day’s training and to gain useful information and skills that will help keep you safe.” say the organisers.
The programme is subsidised by Mountaineering Ireland so the registration fee for each Hill Skills Day is €20. This programme is for adults only, and both members and non-members of Mountaineering Ireland are welcome.
