At €275k, this dreamy thatched Cork cottage could be your passport to the good life

It’s a picture postcard property.
If house hunting in the city has left you tired and disillusioned, there’s a little slice of pastoral heaven you could check out just a short spin from the city.
The Thatch, in Glantane, Mallow, has hit the market at €275,000, with three bedrooms, plenty of period features and more lush greenery than you can shake a stick at visible from every window.
“The minute I saw The Thatch, my face lit up,” says estate agent Johanna Murphy, who is handling the sale.

“It was something like out of a fairytale – stunning, old world, intriguing, just wonderful and of course the impressive feature is the thatched roof, which is in excellent condition and Glantane, well it is a like a village you would see in West Cork – so lovely and yet only a 30-minute drive from Cork City.”
Built in 1910, the house is imbued with history. It was a meeting place for units of the Lombardstown Volunteers and was used as a dispatch depot for sending and receiving mail with frequent visits from Liam Lynch.
When the house was refurbished, they found volunteer telegrams hidden in the roof.
“The three-bedroom, two-storey detached cottage is very deceptive from the outside and what is lovely about the surroundings is that you have mature trees, privacy and only a minute’s walk to the village. The one feature I particularly love is the park across the road which hosts an old telephone box which is used as an honesty book club, very impressive.” adds Murphy.

The accommodation is spacious, well portioned, measuring 119 sq.m. Spread over two levels, there is a ground floor and upper floor beneath the pitched roof.
The dining area is designed mostly from wood, with a large wooden staircase. The first bedroom has wooden floors and an ensuite bathroom with a shower with bedrooms, both ensuite, on the first floor.
“With regards to availability of grants – you have The Thatching Grant – circa €3.5k, SEAI – suite of grants available.” says Murphy. The Vacant Property Refurbishment Grant of €50,000 may also be applicable.
