Eager to get out into your garden?
If this is the year you plan to take on a growing or gardening challenge, a new series of hands-on workshops could be exactly what you need to make it a huge success.
Horticulturist, fermenter, forager and gardener Chloë Dempsey, who is brimming with wisdom on all things leafy, is hosting From Soil to Supper in the gorgeous surroundings of Curraghbeg Plant Nursery in Ovens on Saturdays during April and May.
Not only will you learn a heap of skills you can use forever, but the course fee (€110 per person, 10am to 4pm) even includes lunch, so you can make a relaxing little day out of it too.
These are the workshops you can book now:
- April 5th: Designing and Building a Herb Garden
Participants on this course will learn the basics of planting a herb garden lush enough that you never need to reply on a sad little pot of supermarket herbs again. Both medicinal and culinary herbs will be covered so you can pluck what you need for soups, sauces and home remedies right from the garden.
- April 12th: Building and Growing in Raised Beds
Get your hands dirty and learn how to create and cultivate thriving raised garden beds! This class will cover everything from choosing the right materials and soil to planting strategies that’ll have your veggies and flowers flourishing. Perfect for maximising space and minimising back pain.
- April 19th: Foraging
Discover the wild bounty right on your doorstep with this course, which will teach you how to safely identify and harvest edible plants and fungi in your local area. Explore seasonal finds and learn how to use them in delicious and nutritious ways.

- May 3rd: Designing and Planting a Fruit Garden
Beyond just trees, learn how to create a fruit-filled garden. From strawberries to blackberries, Chloe will discuss which soft fruits thrive in your area, how to plant and care for them, and how to maximise your harvest. Get ready for a summer full of delicious homegrown berries and an autumn of jam-making.
- May 10th: Fermentation

Each workshop is €110 per person and includes a delicious lunch on the day. Packages are also available if you’d like to take more than one workshop. To book, email fermentforagegrow@gmail.com or text 085 131 0344.
