Take a wild walk through The Gearagh’s wetlands at this free event

Dig out your wellies.
Cork Nature Network is inviting the public to celebrate World Wetlands Day on Sunday, February 2nd with a guided walk through The Gearagh, a submerged glacial woodland and nature reserve located two kilometres southwest of Macroom.
“As one of Ireland’s most significant wetland habitats, The Gearagh is of exceptional significance both locally and internationally, as it is recognised under the Ramsar Convention and is designated as a Special Area of Conservation and a Special Protection Area due to its habitats and wetland bird populations.” the group explained.
The walk will be led by Pascal Sweeney, an ecologist specialising in aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems in Ireland.
“Pascal will share insights into the unique habitats of The Gearagh, highlighting the rich diversity of its aquatic and semi-aquatic flora and fauna. Participants can also look forward to observing wintering swans, geese, and ducks in their natural habitat.” they added.
Want to go along? The walk begins at noon on the day and you can reserve your free ticket now here.
How do I get there?
From Cork city, take the N40/N22 west towards Macroom. Shortly before you enter Macroom turn left onto R584. The parking area is on the left hand side, about 2.5 km behind the turn off. Drive slowly as it is not signposted. The meeting point is at the trailhead beginning at the car park.
