Could a green makeover revitalise North Main Street? New plans offer hope

It’s a part of Cork that’s looking a bit grey lately.
But a new plan could see Cork’s North Main Street brought back to life with fresh planting, landscaping and green spaces and more public art and murals, making the area more attractive to locals and visitors.
“As part of a pilot initiative, we are aiming to transform North Main St. through a new creative greening program to improve the environmental, health and social benefits for the businesses, residents and the general public who visit the street to shop and eat.” a Cork City Council spokesperson announced on social media.
Cork City Council is part of the EU GreenDense Interreg Project, working with six European cities and expert organisations to address climate change impacts in urban areas.

As cities across Europe face mounting challenges from climate change, pollution, and biodiversity loss, the GreenDense project is bringing green infrastructure (GI) back into densely populated urban environments.
“Have ideas? Share them with us!” they added.
A stakeholder consultation day will take place at St Peter’s on North Main Street from 10am to 4pm on January 30th and everyone is invited to attend to find out more. You can take a quick online survey to share your views now here.
