From Gremlins to Die Hard, The Triskel is screening some proper Christmas classics

It’s become an annual date for many.
The Triskel Cinema is pulling out all the stops to attract fans of nostalgic Christmas films again this festive season, with a few special additions for good measure.
Gremlins and Scrooged join the line-up at the South Main Street venue this year, with one screening each on Saturday, December 14th, 2024.
Showing from Sunday, December 15th, The Muppet Christmas Carol is a real treat for the younger audience and offers a zanier version of Charles Dickens much-adapted story, while the beloved classic It’s a Wonderful Life is an enduring hit and looks at an idea we’ve all had: what if we were never born?
There’s an ongoing debate over whether or not Die Hard is, in fact, a Christmas movie or ‘just’ a movie set at Christmas. The writer of the popular film confirmed it is a Christmas classic and even provided a checklist comparing it to White Christmas, but you can decide for yourself if you decide to cat it at the Triskel.
Then there’s Home Alone, the film that made Macauley Culkin a child star, which still provides laughs more than 30 years after its original release.
‘Keep the tradition alive’
“Watching these classic films have become part of people’s Christmas traditions over the years.” said Chris O’Neill, Head of Cinema at Triskel.
“It is important to us to keep this tradition alive and allow people to lose themselves in the adventures of Kermit, Miss Piggy and friends, cheer on John McClane retaking the Nakatomi Building, and join Kevin McCallister and George Bailey in understanding the importance of family and community.”
Tony Sheehan, Artistic Director at Triskel, has also include acclaimed pianist Michael McHale in the art centre’s popular Christmas line-up:
“Michael is a truly wonderful musician who has played all over the world. We’re delighted he’ll perform pieces from his popular album here for Cork audiences and that he’ll include some Christmas elements for the season that’s in it.”
Christmas starts at Triskel on Friday, December 13th and runs until Sunday, December 22nd. Tickets are on sale now from triskelartscentre.ie.
