This fascinating Cork talk will explain how your favourite music affects your brain

We’ve all been moved by a piece of music.
But how does music affect us, both physically and emotionally? What happens in the brain when we listen to our favourite songs? And why do certain pieces of music trigger chills or goosebumps?
These are the questions you’ll find answers to at a fascinating Seed Talks event happening in Cyprus Avenue, Cork City on Tuesday, December 10th.
The talk will be led by Dr. Shane Cassidy, the clinical director and founder of Neurolinks, a music therapy service based in Ireland, who leads a team of music therapists dedicated to supporting individuals living with neurological conditions.
Shane’s journey into music therapy began after studying music and working as a primary school teacher, where he became fascinated by the impact of music on learning, memory and emotional regulation. This curiosity led him to pursue both a Master’s and PhD in Music Therapy. His research and clinical interests focus on the effects of music on neurological conditions and mental health.

“From early childhood, music engages our brain’s auditory and motor systems, allowing us to instinctively respond to rhythms and melodies.” he explains.
“As we grow, music continues to play a vital role in shaping our social and cultural identities, influencing our emotional responses and cognitive development. In this insightful talk, we will explore the complex ways in which the brain processes musical sound, and how rhythm, melody, and harmony can shape movement, speech, and cognitive functions like attention and decision-making.”
Doors open at 7pm and the talk starts at 7:30pm – nab a ticket here, €16.73.
