Got some free time? Four lovely Cork projects you can volunteer with this summer

Let’s face it, the world’s a bit of a mess right now.
There’s no shortage of places and groups that could use a helping hand, but if you’re confused about where to start, there are plenty of opportunities to help out right on your doorstep.
If you have time to give back and use your skills for good, and you’re up for feeling that warm, fuzzy glow that comes from knowing you’ve made a difference, however small, the Cork Volunteer Centre has a selection of summer activities you can get involved in.
Here are four projects looking for volunteers right now:
Firkin Crane: This summer, the historic Firkin Crane Dance Theatre will host a series of engaging volunteer opportunities. Participants can look forward to helping out with theatre maintenance, as well as brochure distribution around Shandon.
Safe Gigs Bracelet Making: Cork Sexual Violence Centre in collaboration with the Safe Gigs initiative are supporting weekly Safe Gigs bracelet-making workshops. This women’s-only group takes place every Tuesday in the Cork Sexual Violence Centre. Participants will learn how to craft beautiful bracelets, which will be distributed at gigs and festivals to remind attendees to stay safe and mind each other.
Community Gardening: Dig in and contribute to improving our community spaces. Happening every Tuesday in Pairc Eoin, Ballinlough, community gardening sessions are a fantastic way to connect with nature, learn about sustainable gardening practices, and meet like-minded individuals who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.

Knit and Crochet Group: Calling all knitters and crocheters! Join the new Monday group ‘Project Finishers’ to complete and decorate beautiful handmade items that will be donated. The usual Thursday Knit and Crochet group will also run with no interruption all summer.
Creative volunteers are also needed for CoAction West Cork, with youth support volunteer positions at the Bandon Family Resource Centre and drivers and assistants needed for Meals on Wheels Youghal. In Cobh there’s a beach clean-up event with Clean Coasts at Redbarn Beach on August 8th and DIY volunteers are needed for Cobh YMCA too.
