Two Cork wind farms are opening up to curious hikers and walkers (and entry is free)

They’re undiscovered destinations for hiking and biking.
Two Cork wind farms will be opening up to walkers and explorers this month, offering new picture-perfect picnic spots and lots of local wildlife to check out, whether you’re a seasoned hiker or a curious local.
Wind Energy Ireland is inviting the public to explore Ballyhoura (Knocknatallig) Wind Farm and Castlepook Wind Farm, two of twelve wind farms nationwide taking part in the Get Out in the Wind initiative.

Ballyhoura (Knocknatallig) Wind Farm, on the Cork-Limerick border, is open to the public all month, free of charge. Ballyhoura offers a choice of forest trails of varying lengths and difficulties suitable for walking, hiking, biking or running.
Castlepook will open for one day on Friday, June 14th, 2024.
“Wind energy is an Irish success story that benefits communities all across Ireland, supporting jobs, and cutting our carbon emissions and your bills,” said Noel Cunniffe, Wind Energy Ireland CEO.
“But wind farms can also be a haven for wildlife and offer wonderful family days out with a variety of walking, biking, horse-riding and hiking trails on offer, many of them open to the public every day.”
