Elena Hache is a vegan baker looking for a Cork pub where she can sell pastries

How would you like a pastry with your pint?
As Ireland’s many traditional pubs are forced to change and adapt to survive, a Cork baker is offering local publicans a way to bring in new customers during the quieter parts of the day.
Self-taught vegan baker and pastry chef Elena Hache has been running a small home-based bakery for a few years but recently had to put orders on pause after the business outgrew the limits of her home kitchen.
Now, inspired by Carlow baker Seamus Jordan’s Plúr Bakery, which has just started serving freshly baked wheat bread, pastries, and even some fresh flour over the bar at Joyce’s Pub in Borris, Co. Carlow, Elena has put a call out for a Cork publican eager to try something new.

“I thought it would be great to have something similar in Cork. Especially now, with so many local spots having shut down, it’s pretty hard to find vegan treats around here.” Elena told us.
The Plan
“My plan is to partner with a local venue with underutilised kitchen space—whether it’s a pub, coffee shop, or another suitable location—for two to four weeks. During this time, I’d use the kitchen to whip up an assortment of vegan cakes, muffins, pies, and cheesecakes, all sold directly at the venue.
“The only requirements I have for the kitchen are basic facilities like a sink, countertop space, fridge, oven, and ideally a dishwasher. I’ll bring all the necessary smaller tools myself.

“I believe this popup could bring some new life into Cork’s food offering and attract a diverse crowd looking for plant-based options.
“I’m really excited about the potential and the idea of making this summer in Cork a little sweeter!”
