A surgeon who works in Gaza will share his insights at this Kinsale talk

He returns to Gaza later this month.
But before he boards a flight to the war zone for the second time since October 7th, Professor Nick Maynard is hosting a free evening talk in Kinsale.
A consultant gastrointestinal surgeon at Oxford University Hospital, Professor Maynard operates on victims of major explosive injuries in Gaza.
He will speak about his experiences in the region, which he describes as “hell on earth” at The Trident Hotel in Kinsale on Thursday, April 4th at 8pm. The event is free (donations are welcome) and all are invited to attend the Kinsale Peace Project event.
“I am keen to share my experiences in Gaza as widely as possible and really look forward to doing this in Kinsale,” said Professor Maynard, who takes groups of Oxford doctors specialising in surgery, medicine, paediatrics, and obstetrics to Gaza to teach medical students from the Islamic University of Gaza and Al Azhar University each year.
“In recent years I have worked with Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP UK) as part of their surgical team to travel into Gaza to carry out and teach advanced upper gastrointestinal surgery for cancer and benign diseases,” he explains.
“A major focus of my work in Gaza has been to improve surgical cancer services, introduce multidisciplinary working and online MDT meetings for cancer between Gaza and Oxford/London.”
Professor Maynard was in Gaza in May 2023 carrying out and teaching cancer surgery, and was due to travel out again in October 2023.
“Then of course October 7th happened,” he said.
“In December 2023 with MAP I led the first UK medical mission into Gaza during the current conflict and worked at Al Aqsa Hospital for two weeks, spending most of my time operating on major explosive injuries to the chest and the abdomen.
“I am returning to Gaza in April.”
