Cork’s Cillian Murphy is the first ever Irish winner of the Oscar for Best Actor

By Yay Cork March 11, 2024March 11, 2024

He’s only gone and done it.

Cork’s Cillian Murphy has won the Oscar for Best Actor at the 96th Academy Awards at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles.

After going to bed with fingers crossed, the Rebel County is waking up to the news that Murphy has joined a list of legendary previous winners that includes Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, Tom Hanks, Rober DeNiro, Will Smith, Joaquin Phoenix and Matthew McConaughey in Hollywood history.

The Ballintemple-born star has also broken another record; he’s the first-ever Irish-born winner of the Oscar for Best Actor.

“I’m a little bit overwhelmed,” Murphy said on stage, before thanking Oppenheimer director Christopher Nolan, “every single crew member, every single cast member – you carried me through”.

He also thanked his family: “Yvonne McGuinness, my partner in life and art”, and “my two boys, Malachy and Aran, who are sitting up there – I love you so much.”

“I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight,” said Murphy.

“I’d really like to dedicate this to the peacemakers.”

Oppenheimer sweeps the board

Oppenheimer swept the board at the ceremony. Nominated in 13 categories, Christopher Nolan’s epic biographical thriller won seven Academy Awards last night.

Its star, Cillian Murphy, wearing a classic black tuxedo and loose bowtie by Atelier Versace, hit the red carpet with his family, wife Yvonne McGuinness and sons Malachy and Aran.

This year’s Oscars ceremony started five minutes late after protesters took over Hollywood’s Sunset Boulevard, causing many celebs to leave their cars and walk to the Academy Awards.

Once host Jimmy Kimmel got proceedings underway, Murphy (47) beat fellow nominees Bradley Cooper, Colman Domingo, Paul Giamatti and Jefferey Wright to bring the golden statue home to Leeside.
