This cute kids’ book features lovely illustrations of Cork landmarks

By Yay Cork February 2, 2024February 2, 2024

They’re the scenes we all remember from childhood.

And now you can introduce your kids and grandkids to some of Cork’s most famous landmarks in the pages of Noah’s Cork Adventures, a sweet new storybook written by a Cork-based mum.

Originally from Montreal, Quebec, author Nadine Hughes Campbell moved to Cork six years ago for what she thought would be a short stint on Leeside.

“I had a one-year work contract with a company in Dublin, and it was supposed to be just for a year. I just purchased a house in Montreal and was preparing to settle myself into adulthood, but everything changed when I met my now husband, an amazing Cork man.

Two children and a dog later, living in the city, I am so grateful to call Cork home.” she told Yay Cork.

The book was inspired by Nadine’s son and the many trips he’s taken already: “I wanted to create a book about an Irish boy that looked like him, but at the same time I also wanted a memorable way to document his childhood, and the childhood of so many other Irish children.” she explains.

Having enlisted the help of Ukrainian illustrator Polina Pluslem, the two set to work.

“I was fortunate to discover Polina on a peer-to-peer writer and illustrator website,” says Nadine.

“I spent a long time looking for the perfect illustrator, and when I discovered her work, I knew she was the one! Surprisingly it was really nice to have someone with zero knowledge of the city, to have a completely blank canvas.

“To be able to describe places and things with such detail to her was amazing, I felt like I was experiencing Cork with new eyes all over again, falling in love all over again with the city, and watching it come to life on the pages was beautiful.”

Little readers will spot Fitzgerald’s Park, the Sjhaky Bridge, Cobh’s colourful houses, and the English Market among the scenes in the book.

“This is the first book of a series that takes young readers all around the world and around this beautiful island. The next book is set to be released this summer and will be taking the readers to the vibrant city of Berlin.”

The book is now out and for sale from Nadine’s website, Amazon, Nano Nagle Place, Vibes & Scribes, and Some Dose.
