WTF.

The mystery surrounding a line of twinkling lights spotted in the skies over Douglas last night has been solved

Having captured the phenomenon on camera, former Lord Mayor of Cork Deirdre Forde decided to share the images on social media to see if anyone could shed some light on them.

Is it a bird? is it UFO? anyone see these over #Douglas circa 7.30pm? pic.twitter.com/qPpyXNKZmD

“Is it a bird? is it UFO? Anyone see these over #Douglas circa 7.30pm?” Cllr. Forde asked.

As it turns out, the chain of bright lights is actually a series of Starlink satellites launched recently by Elon Musk’s SpaceX.

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation operated by the American aerospace company that provides coverage to over 70 countries. Earlier this month,  21 satellites were blasted into orbit aboard the Falcon 9 rocket.

Word has it you’ll be able to spot them without binoculars or a telescope for the rest of the week so it’s a great excuse for a stroll after dark.
