Youghal’s iconic cinema is back with a slick Art Deco look (and a WINE BAR)

By Yay Cork July 11, 2018July 13, 2018

This is just fabulous.

Youghal’s iconic Regal Cinema has now reopened on Friar Street after eight years… and it’s had a stunning makeover.

The cinema was date night central when it first opened in 1936. The first film shown was the Irving Berlin musical Top Hat, starring Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.

Later, in 1954, The Regal was used as a base for director John Huston, who would hole up inside to review the reels after each day’s filming of the Warner Brothers classic Moby Dick.

This week the doors of the building are open once again, thanks to a meticulous restoration project by Redbarn Construction, who purchased the property in 2017 for just €90,000.

With €200,000 of state-of-the-art technology installed, ready to show the latest films on three screens, and new mezzanine level seats, shipped from France, the Regal Cinema is set to become a popular spot for weekend trips and midweek movies.

It’s even got its very own wine bar, so film buffs can sip a fine merlot and discuss the finer points of the storyline after the credits roll.

Inside, the original terrazzo floor has been repaired and original doors have been lovingly restored back to their former glory.

The rich furnishings and luxe design are the work of O’Connell Interiors, with Art Deco finishes completed by Ned O’Connell Interiors.

The first films to be screened this month include Ocean’s 8, Mission Impossible, Incredibles 2 and Mama Mia. You can book your tickets here.
